What is Somatic Embodiment?
Somatic Movement & Embodiment explained…
This method holds the premise that the body holds the memory field of everything that has ever happened to us — even when the mind doesn’t remember an event, the body does. The body is the storehouse of every unprocessed traumatic event, unexpressed emotion, repressed feeling, unspoken need or boundary. The body holds all of the unexpressed, unprocessed, and unfelt things that have ever happened to us. All of this holding and repressing creates tension, contraction, stress and potentially eventually dis-ease in the body.
This practice is a process of creating a safe container for the body to speak. For the body to tell us what it needs, unwind tension, complete any incomplete stress cycles, to show us where we’re stuck, and where we need to let go. This is a process of coming back home to the body and saying, “I’m here now, and I’m listening. What do you have to tell me?”
Attuning to our Body’s Wisdom…
The body is constantly giving us messages and signals all day long — it speaks to us through sensation. But because we live in such a dis-embodied culture, we often over override what the body is trying to tell us. This creates an environment of distrust and self abandonment — the body doesn’t trust that we will listen to what it needs or that we will advocate for it. When we allow ourselves to slow down and pay attention to the messages and signals of the body, we begin to restore trust by tending to its needs and helping it release any burden it’s been carrying.
Emotional Freedom…
I often refer to this practice as an ‘Emotional Freedom Technique’ because it is a great tool to alchemize our emotions. Emotion = Energy in Motion. Our emotions are simply energy that need somewhere to go. Instead of suppressing or stuffing our emotions back down, we give them sound, breath and movement to give this energy somewhere to go. We allow our emotions to be expressed and released.
Many of us haven’t been taught how to process our emotions. In childhood, we may have been told, “stop crying”, “you’re okay”, or “go to your room and deal with that”. We learn to shut down what we’re feeling in order to receive love and approval. In turn, we suppress our big emotions and they get stored in the body. The body holds onto this energy until we release it or give it somewhere to go. In this practice, we use sound, breath and movement as transportation systems to help excavate stagnant or stuck energy from the body. We begin to acknowledge the unacknowledged, feel the unfelt, express the unexpressed and digest the undigested. This practice gives us an opportunity to release any energy that is weighing us down (stress, emotional baggage, repressed emotions, etc.) by being acknowledged and expressed.
Embrace all parts of you…
In this practice, we acknowledge whatever shows up. There is no part of you that is not welcome here. No way of expressing or feeling that is “too much”.
We often look at these things as blocks that are in the way of getting to where we want to go, but they are actually the was through. If we address what’s here, and be with what is, and tend to the parts that need tending to, we will actually be able to move forwards. So join me in taking time to honour your body, listening to its need, and relieving some of the burden it’s carrying.
Freedom to Express
These classes are all about attuning to and expressing what is alive in each new moment. We allow whatever is here to be here without trying to change it, deny it, resist or reject it. Whatever surfaces is meant to surface to be acknowledged, felt, and released through expression. We give whatever arises sound, breath and movement. Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional. We do our best not to resist whatever comes up. We give it sound, breath and movement to move it through our body / our system and allow it to be expressed.
A ‘Bottom-Up’ Approach…
Many movement practices use a ‘top-down’ approach where the mind is telling the body what to do and how to move. This practice allows for the exploration of our innate body wisdom. We don’t tell the body what to do, but allow the body to lead and communicate what it needs. The intention of this practice is to re-introduce each of us to our bodies and remember the intelligence that each unique body holds. This is not a workout or a dance class, rather an exploration that invites us to break conditioned patterns of habitual movement and integrate new ways of expressing and showing up in the world.
This may look like a big emotional release, this may be moving very slowly and attuning to the sensations taking place, this may be sounding and shaking, this may be a very gentle rocking. There is no right or wrong way to do these practices.

Core teachings & topics we explore within this practice…
Body Wisdom
The body has innate intelligence - it knows before our thinking brain knows. Creating conversation and dialogue with the body allows us to listen to the body’s signals so that we can make the right choices for ourselves.

You do not need to look outside of yourself for the answers. I encourage people to trust their own direct felt experience. No one else can tell you what is best for you. It’s not up to anyone else to tell a person what they need or what is best for them.
